The Pittsburgh Steelers are a professional football team based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They are a member of the North Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL).
On July 8, 1933, the Steelers were founded as the Pittsburgh Pirates by Art Rooney. Rooney had won about $2,500 at the Saratoga Race Course in New York. He used his winnings to pay the required National Football League franchise entrance fee for a club based in the city of Pittsburgh. The ownership of the Steelers has remained within the Rooney family since its founding.
